The Houses are long dead, purged from colonized space with vengeful steel and angry rifle. The charred ashes of the ancient monarchy have since been built over by industrial hunger, dark secrets carelessly forgotten. Now, buried ghosts are mysteriously returning, threatening to ravage humankind and rip apart the delicate peace struck between the representative democracy of the United Republics and techno-democracy of Sol. At the center of the tempest is an enigmatic man driven to discover the truth of his nightmarish past, a man soon to become entwined in the pain and disaster of the coming cataclysm. Follow a brutal tale of high technology across humankind's vast territories, far into the dangerous wilds of the Reaches where life is won and lost by a blade's nano-thin edge, and deep within the mechanized efficiency and political web of the Core worlds. Encounter desperation, terror, betrayal, and retribution as a cunning information thief, a rogue ship captain, a tortured mercenary, and others become entangled in humankind's struggle for freedom and survival amongst the blood stained heavens.

Cataclysm A A Grapsas 9781475069778 Books

The story is well thought out, and vast new universe with infinite possibilities is laid out before the reader. This made the book thoroughly enjoyable to read for me, and left me digging for the next bit of futuristic technology or alien landscape. There are a few Deus Ex Machina moments, but nothing that managed to break me out of the story.

Hopefully Mr. Grapsas will expand on this universe, giving us another chance to explore this rich new universe.

Cataclysm A A Grapsas 9781475069778 Books Reviews

I never thought about how hard it is to write a book review, but I think it's important to note that I almost never read sci-fi or fantasy. (The last fantasy books I read were by CS Lewis and the most 'sci-fi' I've ever gotten is Kurt Vonnegut) I think books are a lot about taste, so perhaps that info will be helpful when considering my review of Cataclysm.

The good
Cataclysm is a well told story. The first chapters bring you in right away like the opening scenes of a bond movie. The author does a nice job of efficiently giving you the tech and science stuff while still keeping the story moving. I totally missed my subway stop once when reading it.

The bad
I finished the book and I have no patience (East Coast upbringing), so there isn't much bad to go on about. I guess if I compare it with my favorite books and classics the story didn't feel as seamless as a classic, but it did make me want to read the next one (assuming there will be). (Actually, a prequel specifically would be awesome)

The ugly
Apparently in the future, there is some kind of space language which I can't recall, English, and Greek. Greek? Really Mr. GRAPSAS? I can't help but wonder if there is a little heritage bias in the selection of Greek as one of the two sole remaining contemporary languages in the future. -)
TL;DR version of my review
I was unexpectedly grabbed by the characters and pulled along on their journey. Cataclysm is a fast-paced, entertaining adventure. Recommended for people who like to read, and especially for those who like a "sci-fi" adventure.

Full Review
Confession I am friends with the author. He asked me to buy and read the book then write an HONEST review on . I had no idea that he had a passion for writing and was impressed that he had written a novel.

I had some hesitation because I usually do not read fiction, and the genre is not my preference. I figured that if I started reading the book and I didn't care for it, I would just tell him that I tried and the book just wasn't for me.

BUT

Something unexpected happened After reading the first chapter I was hooked.

I kept reading each chapter to find out what would happen with each character, the setup really pulls you along through the story. I enjoyed how each character/chapter would lead me down a path and end up right where the author wanted me to arrive.

I can confidently recommend reading Cataclysm. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did.
I'm not particularly well versed in books as I've only read a few choice ones that came highly recommended like the Lord of the Rings trilogy and the Hunger Games. I generally don't have the patience. In following with that tradition this book, Cataclysm came very highly recommended to me and I was not disappointed. It was so addicting that I powered through over 200 pages in one sitting without even realizing, only stopping when I realized it was 2am in the morning and I had work the next day.

The characters are very well thought out, interesting, and multi-layered, the action top notch, and the lore and atmosphere immediately engrossing. The world is described in a way that is absolutely dripping with detail while not being so verbose as to be boring. The whole time I was reading I was able to paint a vivid image of the world and could clearly see it unfold in front of me as if I was watching a movie. Speaking of which, this book absolutely needs to be made into a movie. It would be amazing.

If mechs, power suits, sword fighting, space combat, and nanite firing rifles sound like your thing then that's another strong vote to read this book also. ;)

In short, if you are a fan of sci-fi action in any medium be it books, film, or video games then you owe it to yourself to read this book. You would be doing yourself a disservice by skipping it. My only complaint is that there isn't a next book to dig into yet.
Among the best, hoping for more!
A very original story line. It was like reading a graphic novel , very action packed, and every chapter kept me wanting to read more.

My favorite character has to be the main villain...Andrew Grasps does an amazing job in creating a realistic reflection of modern day politicians, and the evil undertones in which their dealings can by construed.

Can't wait for the next book...YOU CAN'T HAVE A CLIFF HANGAR WITHOUT A SECOND BOOK!
